Do You Really NEED Procedures For Your Business?

If you’ve ever worked in any type of business, chances are that they had Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for at least one area of their business. Now that you are running your own business, you find yourself going through the motions and wondering if you really need to have any type of formal written procedure.

The short answer is no, you don’t NEED a set of procedures. However, not having them can cause issues later on.

Let’s say you have an assistant that takes care of all of your travel, from managing the trips in your calendar to booking the airfare, hotel, etc. You run all of your travel information and expenses through a software program. Now she’s amazing, always gets you extra leg room, puts every detail about the location in your itinerary, and even makes sure the hotel knows you like 2 extra pillows. Five years later, she has taken a position at a different company or moved, and you have hired your new assistant. How long will it take her to learn everything? How many frustrating mistakes will be made before she’s able to get it right? How much money in change or cancellation fees will be lost?

This is why procedures are so important. They can eliminate most if not all of those headaches. They don’t have to be elaborate, unless you want them to be. Basically, it at least needs to include the list of steps to be taken to carry out a certain action and who is responsible for each of those steps. A more intense SOP would include a Purpose and Scope, and other sections.

Here is a free sample template that you are free to use: TrainingSOP.

This is a super simple template that you could easily re-write for your needs. If you don’t have the time, consider delegating to an admin in your office or outsource it to a virtual assistant.

img_6400As someone who always made people ask, “How does she do it?”, I had to learn how to fit more into my day without completely losing my mind. Now I’m excited to share how I did that and what I’ve learned with everyone else. I just want to see people able to live the life they want, doing the things they want, without the stress they think is normal. I want everyone to experience Peace of Time.
